Why spend your university years in Hungary?
Studying in Hungary can easily be one of the most amazing times in one's life. Several universities and colleges offer high quality education, great networking opportunities and a sparkling, vibrant student life. Cost of living is relatively low, and there is already a substantial community of international students.
You can explore breathtaking monumental architecture, historic sites and scenery both in Budapest and in other popular student towns. The public transport is better than usual, offering easy and relatively fast commuting without an own vehicle. Budapest is also the proud owner of Europe's oldest metro (and the second oldest on Earth), still operating in a good condition. It was opened in 1896 and was listed as a world heritage site in 2002. If you have time to visit other parts of the country, they can be reached by train within a couple hours, and transportation is one of the cheapest in Europe.
You can also benefit from the abundance of natural thermal waters in one of the approximately 450 spas and bathhouses, not to mention Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, often referred to as the Hungarian Sea.
Hungary has produced a great number of mathematicians, Nobel Prize winners, great scientists and artists, and is also the home of numerous inventions, such as the ballpoint pen, Rubik's Cube, holography, the krypton electric bulb, and the Ladybird of Szeged, which is the first robotic animal ever constructed (in 1957).
What should you know before heading to Hungary?
Hungarians are hard to open up fully but can be very welcoming and warm. Their language is extremely hard to learn and has very little in common with any other language, but they appreciate if you try with just a few words.
Family name comes first in Hungary, and first name comes second.
Hungarian food is world-famous, and most traditional dishes include goulash soup, fish soup, cabbage stuffed with minced meat and rice, and almost always involve generous amounts of paprika and sour cream.
Tipping is expected in most restaurants and pubs, the standard tip rate being 10-15%.
